Review of Chili House SF: Yum, Yum, and Double Yum
By Kathy Chin Leong
So, I came here at lunch and had the signature peking duck which we both loved. Came here for my friend's birthday. The duck was sliced tableside and presented on two plates, atop warming dishes with candles beneath them to hold a gentle heat. I appreciated the texture, moist, and the crispy skin. A five-star duck -quack, quack- and so I left super happy and full.Side dishes included baby bok choy and also pork pot stickers shaped in rectangles, Beijing style. Service was prompt and courteous.
Portions are ample, not too small, not too large. I was a bit intimidated by the name "Chili House" because I assumed that everything would be fire engine spicy, but I was wrong. The menu is varied enough to have tame dishes and screaming spicy ones. I am a wimp, and the tame dishes were wonderful, not bland at all.
This is my favorite among the Peking duck places- the duck is crispy, and not oily. It has been rendered well, and the owners have really gotten this recipe down to a science. In the mood for Peking duck? Here is the place!Just so you know, we were treated by the owners, but other guests had the same items, so we were not having anything else that was unique or unusual. Wish we saw the kung fu tea master who also does face changing dance, but that is at night and weekends. Thumbs up. Will return with a crowd.
