Book Review

Kids’ Adventures Around San Francisco Bay
By Kathy Chin Leong

When Elina Wong had her two daughters, she wanted to take them on meaningful outings in order to teach them about the world around them. According to Wong, there was no book or magazine on the market that would address this, and she began creating her own database of educational places to bring her children.

And she didn’t stop there. Wong, who holds a bachelor’s in biochem from U.C. Berkeley and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins in health finance and management, took on the task of writing and researching her first book, Kids’Adventures Around San Francisco Bay in order to help parents in the same boat.

Last year, Wong self-published this guidebook and hired a distributor to land Kids’ Adventures into the hands of notable bookstores such as Barnes and Noble and Borders as well as independent booksellers throughout the Bay Area. The book has already garnered rave reviews in the San Francisco Chronicle , Evening Magazine , and is endorsed by local celebrity skater Kristi Yamaguchi.

What sets this guidebook apart from others is that it is organized according to topic, not region. Fruit farms, trains, music education… these are the places and classes young parents glom onto when their children are young. Many parents are hungry for solid information that is current and “nutritional” for young minds.

Kids’ Adventures not only explains what to do while you are at a certain location, but also suggests follow up activities.  For example, under the California State Railroad Museum entry, the author explains that readers can visit Old Sac while they are there, visit for a school field trip, or learn more about train history by logging onto the California Sate Railroad Museum web site www.csrmf.org .

This parent-oriented listing provides key answers to major issues such as whether or not the place has bathrooms, what to bring, and whether or not the location sells food. At $16.95, this 377-page guidebook is a fun read and is a must-have for moms and dads searching for day-trip ideas in the Bay Area. Look for it at your local bookstore or order it online.
